Dear Sunrise Valley Parents,

It’s time to get ready for Sunrise Valley’s Show What You Know Expo 2024. This is a PTA-sponsored
voluntary school event and is open to all Sunrise Valley students. SWYK will allow students to showcase
their learning and knowledge in a particular subject area with other students and their parents. The
primary objective for the students is to have fun, share information with others, and feel a sense of
pride for a job well done! This year’s event will be held on the evening of Wednesday, March 6, 2024
in the SVES gym and cafeteria.

The project selected by each student should be done independently (without parents), and can be based
on any subject that interests the student. It can be accomplished in student pairs if desired (no trios
please).

The night begins with student check-in at 6:00 pm and from 6:30 – 7:45 pm, students will display project
boards, offer information to attendees, and have scheduled time to explore the Expo and enjoy a
celebratory treat. Students will receive a student-designed SWYK t-shirt for their participation.

Important Participation Deadlines:
✓ T-shirt Design Contest entry must be submitted by Monday, February 5.
✓ Online Project Entry Form must be submitted by Wednesday, February 14.

Show What You Know Expo 2024 is being chaired by Antonia Blackwood. Questions regarding the event
should be directed to antoniablackwood@hotmail.com. Volunteers will be needed for the day of the
event to set up the project boards and for the evening of the event so please look out for a sign-up. We
thank you in advance for your support in making this an enlightening and memorable event for our
students!

Regards,
Ashley Younger, SVES Principal

Presentation

Students can present projects on a 3-panel presentation board available at Michael’s, Dollar Store or an office supply store. Students can also present projects taped to a wall, displayed on an easel or held up by the student. Science projects must follow the Scientific Method (see The Scientific Method tab).

The Scientific Method is used by researchers to support or disprove a theory. It can be used to answer True/False questions only.

The Scientific Method involves the following steps:

  1. Observation – You observe something in the material world, using your senses or machines which are basically extensions of those senses.
  2. Question – You ask a question about what you observe.
  3. Hypothesis – You predict what you think the answer to your question might be.
  4. Method – You figure out a way to test whether your hypothesis is correct. The outcome must be measurable (quantifiable).
  5. Result – You do the experiment using the method you came up with and record the results. You repeat the experiment to confirm your results.
  6. Conclusion – You state whether your prediction was confirmed or not and try to explain your results.
